THE BENEFITS OF GARAGE DOOR MAINTENANCE FOR YOUR HOME OR BUSINESS

Macus Bowden Blog, Marcus Bowden Sponsors, The City of Charlotte

Both homeowners and business owners generally make it a practice to regularly conduct a maintenance check on their homes and offices respectively. Inspecting garage doors should ideally be a part of this maintenance check, as it can extend your garage door’s life and enhance its curb appeal in the meantime.

Wondering how to get started? At Neighborhood Garage Door The Original, we have you covered. Here is how you can get started on maintenance:

Lubricate the moving parts

Garage doors that have no or little lubrication will not open and shut smoothly. If not corrected in time, this can lead to permanent damage. Therefore, It is important for you to ensure that every moving part that the garage door has been lubricated properly. Typically, this includes hinges, bearings, chains, rollers and springs. Different parts require different types of lubricants – rollers, for instance, need motor oil, while chains can be lubricated with a lighter oil.

Smoothen out the tracks

When it comes to maintaining your garage door’s tracks, you should start with visually inspecting them to see if they are correctly aligned – check if the tracks are truly parallel to each other. If that is not the case, try loosening the connecting bolts and re-lining them, then refasten the bolts. Finally, check to if there are any debris on the roller, and if present, remove them with a vacuum.

Make sure that the garage door is balanced

An unbalanced garage door has several tell-tale signs – this can include an uneven look, a slamming noise when they close, or unusual noises. One way to check if there is an issue with the balance is by lifting it a few feet off the ground. If the garage door remains stable, the balance stays aligned. However, if it falls to the ground, it is unbalanced.

Make sure that the weatherstripping is in place

The seal located at the foot of the garage door tends to take a lot of wear and tear due to its exposure to nature. Therefore, make sure to check the entire seal on a regular basis to see if there are any breakages in the seal. Luckily, repairing your garage door weatherstripping is easy – all you need to do is buy some from the store, cut it into the right-sized pieces and adjust them in the damaged spaces.
