If you’re looking for a museum that features the best of the classics as well as the modern, you should put the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art on top of your list. Located in Center City, the museum is housed in a terra-cotta-tiled building that has been designed by the famous architect Mario Botta, and makes for some of the Queen City’s most inspiring structures.
While the museum is indeed young in terms of its own age, it is not so in terms of its collection. In fact, the museum’s collection was until recently the private collection of the Bechtler family of Zurich, Switzerland, and was largely not seen by the American audience.
With a collection of art that has been accumulated over a course of 70 years, the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art features the work of iconic 20th Century artists such as Calder, Giacometti, Warhol and Miró, among others. It also features several letters, photographs and books, which portrays the relationship between the Bechtler family and the artists that have been featured in the collection.
